Lizard Earth works with 2,500+ farmers from 61 communities across three Chiefdoms of Kailahun District in Sierra Leone. The farmers grow their cocoa in small agro-forestry gardens which they cultivate alone or together with their families. During the season, they deliver their cocoa to one of our nine community-based Fermentation and Drying Centers where we process their deliveries in bulk and store the dry beans for evacuation. The centers are operated by community members who we train and backstop.
Certified ...
Our beans are certified-organic by CERES (Certification of Environmental Standards GmbH). We comply with the regulations of the USDA National Organic Program, and the EU Regulation (EC) 834/07. We use cloud-based certification management tools for farmer/field registration, field polygon geo-referencing, deforestation monitoring, producers’ compliance management and internal inspections. Our cocoa is fully traceable; the cocoa purchase process digitized with our Cocoa Collector App.
We enable our farmers to produce better cocoa and live healthier lives by improving their farming practices and providing agricultural support services. Our team inspects every smallholder garden in regular intervals and provides technical expertise and advise. Our farmers receive farm inputs, including tools and planting materials, and participate in trainings and coaching sessions on good agricultural practices and organic farming principles. We connect our host communities with Chocolate Makers and Support Organizations.
Ethically sourced ...
We work closely with our communities all year round. Besides offering trainings and coaching, we buy and process our farmers' beans on the village-level.
Our farmers are our Partners. We listen to their needs and tailor our support to actual demand. While we love quick wins, we are invested for the long-term.
We provide technical assistance, capacity development and know-how transfer through trainings; we form producer associations and provide loans and farm support; we establish tool banks.
We are transparent in our pricing and help farmers to make a living income.
We know where our cocoa comes from. Our team has polygon mapped every farmer’s field and we record every purchase with our Cocoa Collector App.
We ensure optimum quality through strict handling protocols, rigorous evaluation, and benchmarking, as well as organic certification. Our cocoa is great for chocolate-making.
